About Pinhao
Pinhão is a small village in Portugal's Douro Valley, set on a bend of the Douro River among steep hills covered with vineyards. It is a port of call for river cruises travelling upstream from Porto into the wine region. The village is reached across a 68 metre bridge spanning the river, which provides a striking introduction to the landscape.
Pinhão Railway Station is one of the village's best known landmarks. Its exterior walls are decorated with hand painted azulejo tiles showing scenes connected with the Douro Valley and its wine making traditions. The station reflects the importance of the railway in moving people, goods and wine between the valley and the coast. Along the riverfront, restaurants and cafés provide places to sit beside the water and sample local food and Douro wines.
Wine is central to the character of the area. Nearby Favaios is known for Moscatel, a sweet wine produced in the region, while excursions from Pinhão can visit quintas, the traditional wine estates found throughout the Douro Valley. These estates offer opportunities to learn about local wine production and taste wines alongside regional food.
The scenery is one of Pinhão's biggest attractions. Terraced vineyards climb the steep hillsides above the river, with rows of vines following the contours created by generations of agricultural work. The valley becomes increasingly enclosed as the river travels inland, with wooded slopes, rocky ground and working vineyards surrounding the water.
