Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve is a dedicated private island destination situated in the Bimini district of the Bahamas, located roughly 20 miles south of Bimini proper and 65 miles east of Miami, Florida. Serving primarily as a tranquil port of call on Caribbean cruise itineraries, the island offers passengers a serene beach escape surrounded by crystalline tropical waters.
The island possesses a remarkable backstory of ecological restoration. Originally an artificial landmass created through dredging in the late 1960s, the cay was long utilized for mining white oolitic aragonite sand before eventually being abandoned.
In 2015, MSC Cruises secured a 100-year lease with the Bahamian government to transform the former industrial site into a thriving marine sanctuary. Extensive environmental cleanup removed tons of scrap debris from the seabed, allowing the surrounding marine ecosystem to heal and flourish once again.
Today, the 95-acre island is encircled by a protected marine reserve spanning 64 square miles. Vibrant coral reefs and roughly 90 species of tropical fish thrive in the surrounding waters, making the destination a haven for conservation and underwater exploration.
Ashore, visitors can enjoy more than 11,000 feet of coastline spread across six distinct white-sand beaches. Landscaping throughout the resort incorporates over 80 species of indigenous Caribbean trees, shrubs, and native flora, creating a natural tropical environment.
The shore experience centers on eco-friendly water activities and unhurried relaxation. Guests can go kayaking, paddleboarding, snorkeling, or scuba diving with PADI-certified instructors.
Motorized water sports are intentionally excluded to protect marine life and maintain a peaceful atmosphere, while a gentle, shallow lagoon provides a safe swimming spot created specifically for families with young children.
