About Loen
Loen is a small village at the eastern end of Nordfjorden in Norway's Nordfjord region, surrounded by steep mountains, glaciers and deep blue lakes. With fewer than 500 residents, it offers a peaceful contrast to Norway's larger cruise destinations. Expedition ships are the most frequent visitors, and passengers usually come ashore by tender before setting out to explore the spectacular scenery that surrounds the village.
Loen is best known as a gateway to some of western Norway's most impressive natural attractions. Many excursions travel through the beautiful Loen Valley to Kjenndalsbreen, one of the outlet glaciers of the vast Jostedalsbreen ice field, which lies within Jostedalsbreen National Park. The route passes waterfalls, rivers and dramatic mountain scenery, giving visitors a close look at the landscapes shaped by glaciers over thousands of years.
Another highlight is Lovatnet, a striking glacial lake with vivid turquoise water stretching through the valley. Boat trips across the lake reveal towering cliffs and the imposing face of Raven's Mountain, whose historic rockslides created devastating waves that reshaped the surrounding area. The peaceful setting today provides excellent views towards the glaciers and the rugged peaks that frame the valley.
One of Loen's best known attractions is the Loen Skylift, which opened in 2017 and carries visitors from the fjord almost to the summit of Mount Hoven in just a few minutes. From the viewing areas at the top, there are sweeping panoramas across Nordfjorden, Lovatnet, the surrounding mountains and the distant glaciers. A network of walking trails allows visitors to explore further, while more adventurous travelers can tackle the Via Ferrata climbing route that follows the mountainside. Although small, Loen makes an excellent base for discovering the natural beauty of this part of Norway. Shore excursions range from scenic drives and glacier visits to hiking and boat trips, allowing visitors to choose a pace that suits their interests.
