About La Crosse WI
La Crosse is a riverside city in western Wisconsin, set along the Mississippi River near the meeting point of the Black, La Crosse and Mississippi rivers. It is a regular port of call on Upper Mississippi River cruises, where ships typically spend several hours alongside, giving passengers time to explore the city's historic waterfront and welcoming downtown. Its location has made it an important centre for river trade and transportation since the early days of European settlement.
The first permanent European American settlement was established in 1841 when trader Nathan Myrick recognised the commercial potential of this strategic river location. The Mississippi soon became the city's lifeblood, supporting trade, industry and travel while helping La Crosse grow into one of the region's leading river communities. That close relationship with the river remains an important part of the city's identity and is still evident throughout the waterfront today.
Most cruise ships berth at Riverside Park, a green riverside space in the heart of downtown. The park is a gathering place for residents throughout the year, hosting events including Riverfest, Oktoberfest, Rotary Lights and Independence Day celebrations. Walking paths follow the riverbank, making it easy to enjoy views of the Mississippi while watching recreational boats and passing river traffic. Downtown La Crosse is compact and easy to explore on foot, with independent shops, cafés and local restaurants only a short walk from the riverfront. The city has a lively cultural scene, supported by more than thirty arts organisations. The Pump House Regional Arts Center presents changing visual art exhibitions alongside live performances ranging from folk and blues to jazz, adding another dimension for visitors looking beyond the waterfront. Surrounded by the striking scenery of the Upper Mississippi River Valley, where wooded bluffs rise above broad stretches of river and wetland. The combination of natural beauty, historic river heritage and a friendly small city atmosphere gives the port a distinctive character.
