Havila Castor officially entered passenger service in May twenty twenty-two as a small coastal cruiseferry operated by Havila Voyages along the established route between Bergen and Kirkenes. The vessel features an identical sister ship named Havila Capella and maintains a standard capacity of six hundred forty passengers for long-distance regional voyages.
Constructed at the Tersan Shipyard located in Turkey, the ship is powered by liquefied natural gas alongside a six point one megawatt-hour battery pack representing the largest installation of its kind on any passenger vessel at that time. In June twenty twenty-two, she achieved the historic distinction of becoming the first cruise ship to operate completely emission-free using battery power alone through the UNESCO World Heritage site of Geirangerfjord.
Accommodations on board include one hundred seventy-nine cabins providing roughly four hundred sixty-eight berths with lower and upper beds alongside reserved seating space for one hundred seventy-two day passengers. All staterooms feature air conditioning, en-suite bathrooms, free wireless internet access, televisions, and modern amenities available in both interior and ocean-view versions across economy and luxury categories.
The Havrand Restaurant provides traditional Norwegian specialties crafted from locally sourced ingredients featuring rotating menus that update every three days to support the coastal voyage experience. Additionally, a dedicated reserved seating lounge equipped with aircraft-style recliners comfortably accommodates domestic travelers journeying across shorter sections of the route without requiring a cabin booking.
Named after a celestial star located within the Gemini constellation, the vessel received her official christening ceremony in Alesund in November twenty twenty-two with Aurora Saevik, granddaughter of the company chairman, serving as godmother. The ship naturally appeals to travelers seeking an authentic coastal journey along the spectacular Norwegian fjord coastline where appreciation for the landscape supersedes traditional onboard entertainment.
