MS Norrona is a modern cruise ferry built in Lübeck, Germany, with her maiden voyage in April 2003, and accommodates around 1,482 passengers for Smyril Line. She's the only way to bring personal cars to the Faroe Islands and Iceland from Denmark, or from the Faroe Islands and Iceland to Denmark, giving her a genuinely unique role among cruise ferries in the North Atlantic.
She runs weekly services connecting Hirtshals, Denmark, to Tórshavn, the Faroe Islands, and Seyðisfjörður, Iceland, with the Hirtshals to Tórshavn crossing taking around 40 hours and the Seyðisfjörður to Tórshavn crossing about 20 hours.
Onboard, passengers will find restaurants, a swimming pool, a small cinema, and a fitness centre. Room types range from cabins for two and families through to connecting cabins, single berths in a four-person cabin, and a dorm-style space with a shared bathroom. Her character shifts with the seasons.
Winter brings few tourists, and a crew of just 20 to 25 keeps things running as the ferry shifts from luxury ship to something closer to a working cargo vessel. Norrona also observes ocean currents and water properties across the North Sea, the Faroe Shetland Channel, and the Iceland Faroe Ridge on behalf of the American Geophysical Union, making her part of a broader scientific mission beyond passenger transport.
MS Norrona suits travellers after a North Atlantic crossing with their own car, or simply those who want the journey itself to be the voyage. Her twin roles as cruise ferry and cargo vessel, her shifting seasonal character, and her position as the only direct link between these remote islands and Denmark give her a place unlike any other ship on these routes.
