Star Flyer is a four masted barquentine built as a cruise ship and operated by Star Clippers Ltd of Sweden. Built in 1991, this small ship carries 170 guests, making her a vessel for those who value intimacy and a more refined pace at sea.
Star Flyer combines the design character of a traditional 19th century clipper with the amenities of a contemporary luxury sailing vessel. A sister ship to Star Clipper, she was built for a specific kind of cruiser: affluent passengers who enjoy travelling in luxury aboard traditional sailing megayachts. Life onboard stays relaxed, closer to travelling on a private yacht, and guests never feel confined despite her size.
Her decor calls back to the grand age of sailing, with gleaming teak and mahogany rails reflecting her nautical heritage throughout. She offers spacious accommodations, expansive teak decks, and two swimming pools. Across 4 passenger decks sit 85 staterooms in total, including an Owner Suite, Deluxe, Outside, and Inside cabins. Onboard facilities include an indoor outdoor Tropical Bar, a Piano Bar, and an Edwardian style library with an internet station, where a Belle Epoque fireplace creates a genuinely distinctive atmosphere.
What sets Star Flyer apart is her relationship with sail. Although she's motorized, her engines switch off whenever weather conditions allow, and the crew unfurls 36,000 square feet of billowing sails to capture the wind, propelling the barquentine along at speeds of 8 to 10 knots. The most exciting daytime activity is climbing the mast in a rock climbing harness to relax above the Sun Deck in a crow's nest. There are no shows aboard; dinner and the captain's story time are the main evening events. All meals are served in a single open seating in the Dining Room and Saloon, with breakfast and lunch buffet style and dinner ordered from a five course menu.
Star Flyer suits experienced travellers after a quieter, more authentic sailing experience, far removed from the crowds and noise of larger ships.
