SV Noorderlicht is a historic two-masted steel schooner originally constructed in nineteen ten as a light sailing vessel for the Imperial German Navy by Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft in Flensburg, Germany, operating for years as a light vessel on the Kalkgrund station off the Flensburg Firth before having its middle mast removed to improve stability during World War Two. Following decades of diverse civilian service that included functioning as a floating workers' hostel and a sailing club clubhouse in Germany, the historic hull was discovered in Leeuwarden, Netherlands, fully re-rigged, and fitted with an auxiliary engine to begin its remarkable new life as an expedition cruise ship.
Operated for many years by Oceanwide Expeditions and subsequently acquired by Swan Expeditions in twenty twenty-one, the exceptionally hardy vessel now sails regularly into some of the most remote, pristine, and breathtaking wilderness locations across the high Arctic, with a primary focus on the dramatic fjords of the Svalbard archipelago. Between two thousand two and two thousand fifteen, the ship achieved legendary status within the polar community by being intentionally locked into the thick winter sea ice at Tempelfjorden to serve as a reliable and secure land-based camp for adventurous Arctic explorers.
Intimate in scale and traditional in character, the schooner comfortably accommodates approximately twenty passengers across ten cozy cabins while carrying two versatile rigid-hulled inflatable boats to facilitate close-up wildlife observation, glacier viewing, and shore landings in otherwise completely inaccessible coastal regions. Operating primarily out of its seasonal base in Longyearbyen, her carefully designed maritime itineraries span the remote Svalbard islands, the picturesque Lofoten archipelago, and various mainland polar locations without relying on conventional commercial entertainment or superficial onboard distractions.
The robust ice-strengthened hull, compact layout, and intimate passenger capacity make the vessel an absolute dream choice for dedicated nature enthusiasts, photographers, and travelers who prioritize authentic polar exploration, historical context, and true seamanship over standard luxury cruise ship comforts. Every carefully curated expedition delivers a rare, profound, and deeply immersive connection to the natural environment, allowing adventurous guests to experience the raw, untouched beauty of northern glacial landscapes alongside seasoned polar guides and expert crew members.
