Sasebo Cruise Port

Sasebo is a port city in Nagasaki Prefecture on the northwestern coast of Kyushu, Japan. It is a regular port of call for cruise ships, with the waterfront providing easy access to the city centre and public transport. Sasebo's location beside the sheltered waters of its harbour also gives visitors an immediate sense of the city's long connection with the sea.

Sasebo grew from a small fishing settlement into an important naval centre during the Meiji period. The Imperial Japanese Navy established a base here in 1886, taking advantage of the harbour's deep, protected waters and its position close to China and Korea. Naval facilities remain part of the city's character today, with the area's military history reflected in local sights and traditions.

The city's maritime connections have also influenced its food. Sasebo Burger is one of the best known local specialities, a Japanese take on the American hamburger that developed alongside the city's long association with the US Navy. The Kujukushima Islands lie within Saikai National Park, with more than 200 islands scattered across sheltered waters. South of the city, Huis Ten Bosch recreates the appearance of a Dutch town with canals, brick buildings, gardens, restaurants and shops.
