About Qaqortoq cruise port

Qaqortoq rests in southern Greenland near Cape Thorvaldsen, supporting a population of around three thousand residents as the largest town in the administrative region. Operating as an essential port of call on longer Arctic exploration voyages rather than a turnaround port, cruise ships typically anchor offshore and transport passengers ashore via reliable tender boats. The compact coastal settlement provides immediate access to striking scenery and a unique blend of indigenous Inuit culture, rich maritime traditions, and Scandinavian architectural heritage that welcomes global travelers.

The town features a charming colonial character alongside a vibrant contemporary art scene. Historic highlights include the oldest building in town dating from 1797 and the wooden Church of Our Saviour built in 1832, surrounded by brightly painted wooden houses lining the harbor. Between 1993 and 1994, local and Nordic artists transformed the settlement into an open-air art gallery through the celebrated Stone and Man project, embedding over forty sculptures directly into the natural granite rock faces throughout the winding streets. The local museum, housed in a historic building, preserves traditional skin boats, hunting tools, and rare Norse artifacts.

Just nineteen kilometers northeast of the town sit the legendary ruins of Hvalsey, the most prominent Norse site in Greenland featuring a stone church built around 1300. The surrounding natural landscape is defined by the shimmering expanse of Lake Tasersuaq and jagged snow-covered peaks, offering scenic hiking trails amid vibrant summer tundra wildflowers and wild blueberries. Icebergs drift through deep coastal waters year-round, while summer brings feeding humpback and minke whales to the nutrient-rich fjords. Visitors ashore can also enjoy sea kayaking, tasting fresh Arctic cod, and exploring traditional Greenlandic crafts.
