About Puerto del Rosario
Puerto del Rosario serves as the vibrant capital city of Fuerteventura, a sun-drenched island in Spain's Canary Islands archipelago. Positioned along the island's eastern coastline, the settlement has held administrative capital status since 1860. The port functions primarily as a popular and welcoming port of call for cruise liners navigating regional island itineraries and voyages toward North Africa.
The town surrounding the harbor features a compact and user-friendly layout, allowing passengers to explore local shops, cafes, and waterfront promenade attractions easily on foot directly from the pier. In May 2025, a new cruise terminal was officially inaugurated at the port. This facility features a modern modular design equipped with a separate dining area, comfortable lounges, and an outdoor terrace overlooking the sea.
The city possesses a unique historical origin. It was originally named Puerto de Cabras, or Port of the Goats, reflecting its early roots as a modest fishing village and shipping point for livestock. Betancuria, the ancient inland capital, long overshadowed the coastal settlement. However, as maritime trade expanded thanks to the island's sheltered natural harbor, the port grew in prominence. In 1957, authorities renamed the town Puerto del Rosario to give the capital a more refined name.
Fuerteventura itself is an island of dramatic natural contrasts, boasting a warm desert climate with abundant year-round sunshine that makes it an exceptionally popular winter getaway for cruise travelers. Beyond the urban center, the surrounding terrain changes rapidly, shifting from golden coastal beaches to dark volcanic rock formations and expansive inland sand dunes.
