About Prague
Prague is the capital of the Czech Republic, standing on the Vltava River in the heart of the country. With a population of around 1.4 million, it is a major destination for river cruisers, serving as both a turnaround point for cruises beginning or ending in the city and a port of call on longer itineraries. River cruise moorings are close to the city centre, making Prague particularly convenient to explore on foot.
Prague's history stretches back more than a thousand years, and its streets bring together Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture. It was once the capital of the Kingdom of Bohemia and the seat of several Holy Roman Emperors, including Charles IV and Rudolf II. Charles Bridge is one of its best known landmarks. Construction began in 1357 under Charles IV, creating the medieval stone crossing that still links the city's historic districts today.
The river is central to Prague's character. The Vltava is the longest river in the Czech Republic and is often regarded as the country's national river. Twenty one bridges cross it within the city, creating changing views of church towers, historic buildings and the hills rising beyond the waterfront. From the river, the skyline gives Prague much of its distinctive character, with the spires of the Old Town, castle complex and churches visible above the streets.
The historic centre is packed with places to explore, including Prague Castle, the Old Town Square and its famous Astronomical Clock, medieval lanes and landscaped gardens. The compact centre makes it possible to combine major sights with time spent browsing independent shops or simply sitting in one of the city's many squares.
Prague is equally appealing for its food and drinking culture. Czech beer has a long tradition, and local breweries, beer halls and traditional taverns remain an important part of city life. Restaurants range from traditional Czech cooking to modern European cuisine, giving visitors plenty of choice after a day exploring the historic centre.
