Portsmouth UK information
LOCODE: GBPME
Portsmouth is a port city in Hampshire, England, situated on Portsea Island off the south coast in the Solent, making it the only city in England located primarily on an island. The city lies 22 miles (35 km) south-east of Southampton and 74 miles (119 km) south-west of London. Most cruises from Portsmouth are turnaround voyages, though the port also serves as a port of call on longer itineraries.
The modern cruise terminal opened in 1976, drawing early interest from cross-channel operators running to the Channel Islands, Cherbourg and Saint-Malo. The terminal is compact and straightforward, located within 2 miles (3 km) of the city centre and reached directly by the M275 motorway. Direct rail services connect Portsmouth and Southsea station to London Waterloo, Brighton, Gatwick Airport, Southampton and beyond, with the cruise port a five-minute taxi ride from the station.
The city's maritime heritage runs back nearly a thousand years. Portsmouth has contained a significant Royal Navy dockyard and base for centuries, and was founded around 1180 by the Anglo-Norman merchant Jean de Gisors. The Historic Dockyard remains the heart of the waterfront, where you can walk aboard HMS Victory and see the Mary Rose, the Tudor warship that sank in the Solent during Henry VIII's reign. The Spinnaker Tower, one of the UK's tallest structures at 560 feet (170 m), dominates Portsmouth Harbour's waterfront and offers sweeping views over the city and anchorages. Nearby is Southsea, a resort area with a pier-located amusement park. The older quarter of Portsmouth, known as Old Portsmouth, sits at the water's edge with narrow streets, historic pubs and cobbled lanes that recall its seafaring past.
The setting is on the sheltered Solent, with the Isle of Wight just offshore. It enjoys a temperate maritime climate, though it can be breezy and cool. Beyond the immediate waterfront, the city has good access to wider attractions. The New Forest is within reach to the north-west, and London is little more than an hour away by rail. The Cruise Globe cruisers log more from Portsmouth and its waters than from many other UK ports, and the route data shows why. It is a genuine port of call for those with an appetite for naval history and English seaside character.
