About Port Chalmers
Port Chalmers is a town serving as the main port of Dunedin, New Zealand. It lies 13 kilometres inside Otago Harbour, some 13 kilometres northeast of Dunedin's city centre. It typically functions as a port of call rather than a turnaround port, as cruise ships arrive to explore the city of Dunedin and the surrounding region. An i-SITE information centre and taxi rank are available at the terminal, and buses run regularly to central Dunedin.
The setting is dramatic, with the harbour formed from the drowned remnants of the giant Dunedin Volcano centred close to what is now Port Chalmers. The remains of this violent origin can be seen in the basalt of the surrounding hills, with the last eruptive phase ending some ten million years ago, leaving the prominent peak of Mount Cargill. This combination of volcanic geology and sheltered waters makes for a striking arrival.
Port Chalmers itself has deep historical roots. The first organised European settlers arrived in Otago Harbour on the John Wickliffe, which moored off Port Chalmers on 23 March 1848. New Zealand's frozen meat export trade was inaugurated here in 1882, transforming the nation's economy. The town also became an important staging point for Antarctic exploration, utilized as a base by American explorer Richard E. Byrd in 1928, Lincoln Ellsworth in 1933, and several other notable international explorers over the coming decades.
The real draw for cruise passengers, however, is Dunedin. Often nicknamed "Edinburgh of the South," the city features grand Victorian and Edwardian architecture born from a late 19th-century gold rush. The hilly landscape of the Otago Peninsula gave rise to Baldwin Street, known as one of the world's steepest residential streets, while the presence of the University of Otago keeps the historic city vibrant and modern. Nearby attractions include Larnach Castle, New Zealand's only castle, alongside local habitats for rare yellow-eyed penguins, fur seals, and the Royal Albatross.
