Pointe-à-Pitre sits on the southwestern portion of the island of Grande-Terre, facing the Caribbean Sea in the centre of Guadeloupe. As Guadeloupe's largest city and economic capital, it operates primarily as a vibrant port of call on Caribbean itineraries, while also serving as a homeport for select cruise lines. Cruise ships dock conveniently at the Centre Saint-John Perse cruise terminal, a modern facility located just a short walk from downtown that offers two berths, luggage handling, a tourist information office, and a market village selling local handicrafts.
The city has endured a challenging history marked by natural disasters. After Guadeloupe returned to French control in 1763, Pointe-à-Pitre was officially founded in 1764 by royal edict, though a great fire destroyed it entirely in 1780 and an earthquake devastated it in 1843. Despite further fires and earthquakes before the close of the nineteenth century, its strategic location and large sheltered port allowed the city to thrive and remain the territory's primary maritime hub.
Shopping is a major draw for visitors, as Pointe-à-Pitre functions as a duty-free port known among the Caribbean's finest retail destinations. The city features numerous shops offering France-imported goods, including wines, designer clothes, brand fashions, perfumes, jewelry, and cosmetics, alongside smaller tourist shops selling local wood carvings, shell jewelry, pottery, and cloth dolls. The wider destination also offers plenty to explore, from the palm-dotted Place de la Victoire and the historic Cathédrale de St Pierre et St Paul to the UNESCO-designated Guadeloupe National Park, home to the towering Soufrière volcano and lush tropical forests.
The local weather remains warm year-round, featuring steady tropical highs tempered by refreshing northeast trade winds. Have you ever shopped duty-free or explored the vibrant markets of Grande-Terre?
