Pigeon Island Cruise Port

Pigeon Island is a 44 acre islet in the northern part of Saint Lucia. It is associated with Rodney Bay on the island's northwest coast, where cruise ships anchor and passengers can be taken ashore by tender. Once separated from Saint Lucia by the Caribbean Sea, Pigeon Island was connected to the mainland in 1972 by a causeway created using material excavated during the construction of Rodney Bay Marina.

The island has a long and varied history. Its two peaks are surrounded by the remains of military fortifications, including an 18th century British fort and Fort Rodney. The British used the island as a strategic lookout for French ships approaching from nearby Martinique. In 1782, Admiral Rodney sailed from Pigeon Island to confront the French fleet in the Battle of the Saints. Earlier, during the 16th century, French pirate François le Clerc used the island as a base.

Pigeon Island became a national park in 1979 and was designated a national landmark in 1992 under the care of the Saint Lucia National Trust. The historic remains are now among the main attractions for visitors, with paths leading around the old fortifications and up the island's two peaks. The higher ground provides views across Rodney Bay and towards the surrounding coastline.

The island also appeals to visitors who prefer time outdoors. Beaches and clear Caribbean waters provide opportunities for swimming, snorkelling and diving, while the surrounding landscape makes for an easy change of pace after spending time exploring the ruins. Pigeon Island is also closely associated with the Saint Lucia Jazz Festival, serving as one of the event's principal venues.

For cruise passengers, the area combines history with the natural scenery of northern Saint Lucia. A visit can involve exploring the old military sites, walking the trails and enjoying the beaches, with views across Rodney Bay and the green mainland beyond. The island's compact size makes it possible to see several of its main features during a shore visit while still leaving time to enjoy the water and scenery.
