About Mossel Bay cruise port

Mossel Bay is a harbour town of about one hundred seventy thousand people on the Garden Route of South Africa, an important tourism and farming region of the Western Cape Province, lying four hundred kilometres east of Cape Town and four hundred kilometres west of Gqeberha. Ships anchor offshore at this port, allowing eager international travelers to tender ashore safely and experience the vibrant maritime culture of the Western Cape.

Modern recorded history of the municipality began in February of fourteen eighty-eight when renowned Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias landed with his loyal crew near the modern day museum complex to replenish vital drinking water supplies during their epic quest to find a trade route to India. South Africa's very first official post office was established here centuries ago after early sailors began leaving written correspondence in the cleft of a revered five hundred year old milkwood tree that still stands proudly near the Bartolomeu Dias Museum Complex as a protected National Monument.

Benefiting from a wonderfully mild climate influenced directly by the warm Agulhas Current of the Indian Ocean to the south and the majestic presence of the Outeniqua Mountains to the north, the welcoming destination offers more than thirty-seven miles or sixty kilometres of pristine beaches alongside at least three hundred days of sunshine annually. The charming historic center overlooks a bustling working harbor and features the historic Cape St Blaize lighthouse constructed in eighteen sixty-four, alongside the comprehensive maritime museum exhibiting a full scale replica of the explorer's historic vessel.

The broader regional environment now plays a vital role in the flourishing local tourism economy by offering adventurous visitors endless opportunities for deep-sea fishing, scuba diving, thrilling white shark cage diving, seasonal whale watching, and high-altitude skydiving. International tourists exploring the stunning coastline continue to deeply appreciate the harmonious blend of rich maritime heritage, dramatic natural landscapes, and modern recreational amenities available throughout this remarkable South African port town.
