About Mosquera Island
Mosquera Island is one of the smallest islands in the Galapagos archipelago, located between North Seymour and Baltra Islands, and consists of many coral reefs, making it a great site for practicing snorkel and observing marine life. Serving as a port of call on Galapagos expedition sailings, the islet consists of a narrow strip of brilliant white coral sand and dark lava rocks surrounded by clear shallow waters. Because of its tiny footprint and low elevation, the island offers wide views of the surrounding ocean and neighboring islands from almost any point on the shore.
Wildlife watching remains the central focus of any visit to this unique island, with animals spotted across almost every inch of the beach. The main attraction is the large resident sea lion colony. Visitors will see playful pups splashing in the gentle surf, females resting in groups along the warm sand, and large bull males patrolling the shoreline to protect their territory. Along with the sea lions, the sandy shores are shared by dark marine iguanas sunning themselves on the rocks, blue-footed boobies diving for fish, red Sally Lightfoot crabs scurrying across the lava formations, and rare lava gulls resting quietly near the water.
Beneath the surface, the marine environment is just as active. Snorkelers frequently spot white-tip reef sharks resting on the sandy bottom, gentle stingrays gliding through the shallows, sea turtles surfacing for air, and colorful schools of tropical fish swimming among the extensive coral formations. The calm coastal waters make it an excellent location for both beginner and advanced snorkelers to observe marine life in a completely natural habitat.
Because there are no docks, passenger facilities, or built infrastructure anywhere on the islet, visits are conducted as wet tender landings directly onto the sandy shore. Guests arrive in small groups via zodiac boats launched from expedition cruise ships anchored offshore. Visitors are accompanied by certified local naturalist guides who explain the delicate ecosystem and ensure safety. The tiny size of the island means close encounters with animals are virtually guaranteed, though visitors are always reminded to maintain a safe and respectful distance from the wildlife at all times.
