About Lunga Island
Lunga Island is the largest of the Treshnish Isles, lying west of the Isle of Mull in Scotland's Inner Hebrides. Part of the Loch na Keal National Scenic Area, the uninhabited island is a memorable stop on expedition and small ship cruises exploring Scotland's west coast. Cruise ships remain at anchor off nearby Tobermory on the Isle of Mull, with passengers travelling to Lunga by small boat for shore landings, weather and sea conditions permitting.
Although no one lives on Lunga today, the island has a long human history. It was inhabited until the nineteenth century, when its small settlement was abandoned. The remains of traditional blackhouses can still be seen in the northeast of the island, their weathered stone walls standing as reminders of the families who once lived here. Aside from these ruins, the landscape has been left largely untouched, allowing nature to reclaim the island over the generations.
Wildlife is the reason most visitors make the trip. Lunga is protected as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, a Special Protection Area and a Special Area of Conservation because of its internationally important seabird colonies and marine habitats. During the breeding season, thousands of puffins nest on the island, often showing little concern for nearby visitors. Guillemots, razorbills, kittiwakes, European shags, Manx shearwaters and storm petrels also breed here, while grey seals are regularly seen along the rocky shoreline and in the surrounding waters.
The scenery is equally impressive. Lunga's volcanic origins have created a rugged coastline of cliffs, rocky outcrops and grassy slopes overlooking the Atlantic. The surrounding islands and sheltered waters of Loch na Keal add to the dramatic setting, making the journey to the island as rewarding as the landing itself. Walking trails are simple and informal, encouraging visitors to slow down and appreciate the wildlife and uninterrupted coastal views.
