About Isla Gardner
Bahía Gardner sits along the northeastern coast of Española Island in the Galápagos Archipelago of Ecuador, representing one of the most pristine landings in the South Pacific. Operating as an expedition port of call, cruise ships anchor offshore in calm, sheltered waters while passengers travel ashore via Zodiac tenders onto a breathtaking coral sand beach. Surrounded by turquoise ocean waters and low coastal brush, the bay offers an idyllic setting for beach walking, swimming, and marine wildlife observation.
The bay's defining feature is its expansive stretch of brilliant white sand beach, home to one of the largest sea lion colonies in the entire Galápagos. Pups and adults haul out directly along the shore, displaying remarkable curiosity toward visiting expedition groups. Just offshore, clear waters provide exceptional snorkeling opportunities alongside green sea turtles, playful sea lion pups, colorful reef fish, and whitetip reef sharks. Nearby rocky islets like Gardner Islet and Osborn Islet offer additional underwater sites for observing marine iguanas and eagle rays.
As one of the oldest islands in the archipelago, Española supports unique endemic species that evolved in isolation over millions of years. Shore walks along the beach reveal three distinct species of Darwin's finches alongside the fearless Española mockingbird and colorful Española lava lizard. Between March and December, the island hosts nearly the entire global breeding population of the magnificent Waved Albatross, which nests on the island alongside nesting colonies of Blue-footed Boobies and Nazca Boobies.
