Hubbard Glacier stretches across eastern Alaska and Yukon, Canada, nestled deep within the protected wilderness of Wrangell–St. Elias National Park and Preserve and Kluane National Park and Reserve. The glacier's dramatic history includes a famous 1986 surge that completely blocked the outlet of Russell Fjord, forming Russell Lake and triggering the largest glacial lake outburst flood in recorded history when the natural dam gave way. Similar advance activity closed the fjord opening again temporarily in 2002 before summer rains washed away the barrier. Because the vast majority of the glacier's ice sits submerged beneath the waterline, newly calved icebergs frequently shoot violently upward toward the surface, requiring ships to exercise extreme caution and maintain a respectful buffer zone in Disenchantment Bay.
