About Flam
Flåm is an idyllic Norwegian village situated at the inner end of the Aurlandsfjorden, a breathtaking branch of the famous Sognefjorden in Sogn og Fjordane county, Norway. Despite having a permanent population of just over 290 residents, this peaceful mountain settlement welcomes around 160 cruise ships each year as a highlight port of call on Norwegian fjord itineraries.

The village's most famous highlight is the legendary Flåm Line (Flåmsbana), a 12-mile (20-kilometer) engineering marvel running between Flåm and the mountain station at Myrdal. Operating regular trains since 1942, it ranks as one of the steepest standard-gauge railway tracks in the world, negotiating a steep gradient of 1 in 18 as it climbs past deep gorges and cascading waterfalls. A museum housed inside the former railway station building documents the line's historic construction.
The surrounding Aurlandsfjord serves as the dramatic backdrop for every visit. Towering rock walls rise directly from the fjord waters, creating a stunning visual spectacle that forms part of a designated UNESCO World Heritage region.
