About Breisach am Rhein
Breisach is a historic German town of approximately 16,500 inhabitants situated along the Rhine River in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Operating primarily as a scenic Rhine River cruise port of call, ships dock along the waterfront, giving travelers easy access to the town's hilltop historical center. Breisach sits roughly 20 kilometers between Freiburg, Germany, and Colmar, France, near the volcanic Kaiserstuhl hills. A bridge spanning the Rhine links Breisach directly to Neuf-Brisach in Alsace, making it a gateway for exploring both German and French border regions.
The town's skyline is dominated by St. Stephansmünster, a magnificent Gothic cathedral built atop a basalt hill starting in the early 13th century. Until engineer Johann Gottfried Tulla straightened the Rhine River in the 19th century, this basalt hill sat surrounded by water during river floods. Although Allied artillery destroyed 85 percent of Breisach during World War II, the town and its iconic cathedral were meticulously rebuilt, preserving the medieval character of its cobblestone streets, historic town hall, and ancient defensive wall foundations.
Situated in the sun-drenched Upper Rhine Valley, Breisach serves as a center for Baden wine production, surrounded by rolling vineyards growing Riesling and Pinot grape varieties. The nearby Kaiserstuhl hills host the annual Kaiserstuhl Wine Festival each late August and early September. Shore excursions from Breisach frequently take visitors into the Black Forest region, located less than an hour away, or across the border to view the star-shaped fortifications of Neuf-Brisach in France, facilitated by open borders under the Schengen Agreement.
Local taverns, wine bars, and the weekly market at Marktplatz offer visitors regional cheeses, cured meats, fresh produce, and local Baden wines.
