About Akpatok Island
Akpatok Island is an uninhabited, remote island situated in Ungava Bay in northern Quebec, forming part of the Qikiqtaaluk Region of Nunavut, Canada. Operating as an extreme Arctic expedition port of call, cruise ships anchor offshore in deep polar waters while passengers go ashore via Zodiac inflatable boats. The island features dramatic, towering limestone cliffs that rise up to 250 meters above the sea, dissected by steep ravines that open onto a vast inland plateau. Its untouched, wild landscape offers an extraordinary gateway into the pristine environment of the High Arctic.
The island takes its name from akpat, the Inuktitut word for the thick-billed murre, which nests along the sheer rock faces in tremendous numbers. Designated as a Canadian Important Bird Area, the island's towering cliffs host massive breeding colonies of murres alongside black guillemots and peregrine falcons. In addition to sea birds, the surrounding waters and sea ice support resident populations of walruses, ringed seals, and polar bears. Archaeological sites near the island's southern tip also hold preserved remnants of ancient Dorset culture settlements dating back centuries.
